Dr. Venhaus is director of clinical trials management and chief medical officer at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. As a board-certified anesthesiologist and graduate of the Heidelberg, Germany, Medical School, he joined ASTA Medica AG Research in 1987 to conduct clinical studies in analgesics, allergy/asthma and oncology. After relocating to the US in 1990, Dr. Venhaus served as VP medical affairs of the newly founded ASTA Medica Inc., subsidiary in Hackensack, New Jersey, before he joined Coley Pharmaceutical Group, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in the same function. For both organizations, he established and led the clinical research operations. In 2002, Dr. Venhaus joined the Ludwig Institute as head of clinical affairs to oversee the expansion of its clinical research capabilities, including the introduction of electronic data capture and drug safety management. In 2006, he also assumed responsibility for regulatory affairs, and in 2010, he became the director of clinical trials management and chief medical officer. Since 1987, Dr. Venhaus was responsible for the conduct of 80+ clinical Phase I/II/III trials with 30+ study agents in 15 countries, mainly in the field of oncology and cancer immunology, working with many national and international clinical sites, clinical research organizations, pharmaceutical/biotech companies, as well as health and ethics authorities.
