Shimon Sakaguchi, MD, PhD

Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi is University Distinguished Professor at Osaka University. Dr. Sakaguchi is renowned for his discovery of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which can prevent autoimmunity but can also aid tumor survival. He also characterized the biological functions and potential roles of Tregs in immunotherapy applications. His current work continues to elucidate how different signals influence Treg behavior, to help guide clinical approaches for cancer as well as other inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

Dr. Sakaguchi has received the 2004 William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumor Immunology, been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and been member of CRI’s Scientific Advisory Council since 2013.
