How Immunotherapy Saved Dan’s Life

Dan Griffith’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).  This harrowing diagnosis marked a treatment pivot that would ultimately save his life, thanks to immunotherapy’s life-saving capabilities.

Dan recalled the early days of his diagnosis, where he underwent what is often a common course of treatment — chemotherapy and radiation. While these methods were vital in stabilizing his condition, Dan and his medical team knew they were not enough to secure long-term health stability. The treatments had hit their functional ceiling, and although the initial results were positive, there was still a lingering uncertainty about his future.

During a follow-up appointment, Dan’s oncologist expressed fresh optimism. “Dan, there’s something new I want you to know about,” the oncologist said. An immunotherapy drug called Durvalumab, sold under the brand name Imfinzi ®, which had just been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), showed promise for cancer patients like Dan. The oncologist explained that this new approach had the potential to extend Dan’s life and offered a promising alternative to more invasive procedures. Dan agreed to try Durvalumab without hesitation.

Two years after his last treatment, Dan remains cancer-free. The immunotherapy saved his life and transformed his outlook on the future. “I think the doctors did the absolute best they could with radiation and chemotherapy, but to save and extend his life, I believe in Imfinzi ®,” said Dan’s wife, Cheree. She recalled the intense moments of fear and uncertainty, where she turned to research online, trying to understand what stage 3A cancer meant for her husband. The prospect of Dan’s diagnosis was terrifying, but as Cheree did her due diligence, she realized the advancements in immunotherapy provided a beacon of hope.

Dan’s journey highlights the critical role of innovation in cancer treatment. With each successful PET scan, the overwhelming sense of gratitude grows stronger. “There were tears at diagnosis, and there are tears with each successful scan,” Dan shared, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of his battle with cancer. His story is a testament to the power of immunotherapy, not just in prolonging life, but in giving patients more meaningful years with their loved ones.

Today, Dan and Cheree celebrate each day as a gift, a chance to cherish the life they have fought so hard to preserve. “He is my everything! We are soulmates,” Cheree says. Their story is one of resilience and love given new breath through the remarkable potential of immunotherapy to create a world immune to cancer.
