Meet the 2021 #TeamCRI TCS NYC Marathon Runners! October 18, 2021December 14, 2022 Cierra Howard On November 7, 2021, tens of thousands of runners will be hitting the streets for TCS New York City Marathon. Help us cheer on our Team CRI members who have been not only training for a marathon, but also helping to raise funds for a future immune to cancer. Liza Carrigan What inspired you to run the TCS NYC Marathon this year? I have always wanted to run a marathon and I grew up right out side New York City. I love New York so much and my brother did too. I knew if I could find a way to run in his memory and for myself it would be perfect. Why did you want to run with Team CRI and raise funds for our mission? My brother died from a sarcoma in January 2020 and left behind his two kids. I wanted to raise money for cancer research in memory of him and so other people can survive. Have you ever run in a marathon before? If so, which one(s)? No. Is there any advice you would give to someone wanting to run a marathon? Any fundraising advice? If it's something you want to do, I would say go for it. There are so many running plans for all types of runners. I was able to meet my goal with the help of my sister and posting on Facebook. Is there any fun fact or story you would like to share with the Team CRI community? I had a dream about my brother in which I told him I was running a marathon for him and he answered "Why the hell are you doing that?" Andrew Dumont What inspired you to run the TCS NYC Marathon this year? I've always wanted to run the NYC Marathon. At the beginning of the pandemic, I got sick with COVID that put me in the hospital three times and has created long-term breathing issues, shortness of breath every day—even a year and a half after getting sick. The only temporary relief that I've found for that is running and I refuse to let myself become chronically ill. So I'm forcing myself to push through and run. Why did you want to run with Team CRI and raise funds for our mission? While living in New York in 2017, my mom was diagnosed with late stage ovarian cancer. I saw the struggle my mom went through as she battled the disease, through many rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, and it hit very close to home just how terrible the disease is. I'd love to see a world where cancer is no longer a killer and CRI's work is critical in that. Have you ever run in a marathon before? If so, which one(s)? No, I haven't. Is there any advice you would give to someone wanting to run a marathon? Any fundraising advice? Just run. 🙂 Is there any fun fact or story you would like to share with the Team CRI community? I've watched the NYC Marathon every year for the past five years (with exception to last year) from the crowd. Support Team CRI Runners Photos courtesy of runners. Banner photo by Miguel A.
